Tributes

Riders

It is only correct that we pay tribute to colleagues that have sadly passed away in the recent past. These friends were a big part of our sport and we pay our small tribute to them.

Chris Jones - RIP

Chris Jones (14) son of Pam and Clive Jones at CJ Scooters, in Droitwich, was sadly fatally injured on the start line at the recent 2005 August Bank Holiday motorcycle meeting. Chris was a star at only 14 and had secured a Moto GP ride for 2006. His ability was apparent from early days and this young rider was a motorcycle champion in the making. Pam and Clive have been good friends of Scootering for a long time and we extend our deepest sympathies to them, their family, friends, and fellow competitors, on their sad loss.

Peter Mullinder - RIP

The recent sad passing of our colleague Pete Mullinder adds to the list of Racers who have passed away. Pete was a super guy with a gentle voice and a wonderful attitude towards the sport. Luton Lambretta Club, the club Pete rode for, has a great history in scooter sport from the late 50's to date. Pete was someone who had spent his early years with Luton LC learning his craft and this spanned over four decades. His scooter racing exploits took Pete to be recognised as a gifted rider and one who was recognised by fellow riders as one of the greats.
Pete loved a good laugh and he was a tremendously fit man. To lose someone so young and energetic saddens us. The BSSO extends their deepest sympathies to Pete's wife Val and his family, his club members and friends throughout scootering. Pete will always live on in our memories.

BSSO President Norrie Kerr, has recently received a letter of thanks from Val Mullinder, thanking all BSSO members and the BSSO committee for their heartfelt feelings sent in communication to her on Pete's passing by the BSSO. Val also thanked us for our kind donation, which helped raise a total of almost £1000 for the British Heart Foundation. We thank Val for her kind words.

Terry Frankland - RIP

Terry Frankland, where he loved to be....in the workshop.

Terry was the most enthusiastic rider, dealer, tuner....you name it - Terry was it. He will be missed by all scooterists. Below we pay respect to a man who was a giant in our eyes.

Terry was a good friend to all who knew him. He found time to elaborate all he knew and made sure you got his point with that wonderful Welsh brogue with “you know what I mean” or “you understand“. He made sure he was understood and would spend time making sure you got his message. People who knew him knew a soft hearted person who never bore a grudge, a sensitive man who understood other people’s failings. He was a terrific person to know. He had a wonderful knowledge of his business and his love for scooter tuning and scooter sport was well known.

He never looked the part of a scooter racer, like some skin and bone riders, Terry was fond of his grub and it showed. However as soon as his leg was cocked over his machine, you were up against a guy who was a winner. Terry had a superb knowledge of engineering and knew all there was to know about tuning scooters. His infectious knowledge was known in far corners of the world. His opinion was sought by many top riders. He never feared to give an honest opinion to anyone and in that; we see the real side of Terry.

Terry always respected those around him, both in business and with the BSSO, Terry’s reputation grew in stature thanks to his honesty. His involvement in the rules and regs, in what could and couldn’t be done, was very helpful in creating the regs and stability we have in the sport today. Terry was always interested in what we could do to better the sport and the BSSO have gained from his input over the years.

Look at any trophy in UK scooter competition and Terry’s name will be on it. A truly special rider he was quite honestly unequalled in scooter sport. There was and never will be anyone like him.

Roly Caldecutt - RIP

It is with sadness that we inform you that our good friend and colleague Roly Caldecutt has passed away. Roly Caldecutt was only 52 years of age, when he was taken from us so suddenly. He died from a heart attack. As an organisation we have lost a valuable friend and an colleague in scooter sport. His drive and enthusiasm coupled with a desire to do the best possible job was his hallmark. As a mark of respect from the 2002 season the class that Roly made his own will be named after him.
The Sidecar Class passenger Champion will be renamed -

"The Roly Caldecutt Sidecar Passenger Championship"

Roly gave scooter sport everything. We feel this award will be a testament to Roly's memory.
