Championship Points Calculations 2008


A few people have raised queries either directly or indirectly with me regarding Championship positions, So I will clarify the calculations;

Since taking over the BSSO Championship Controller position this year I have simply calculated and published class positions according to exactly how it is written in the regulations- as published previously ( copied below )

There seems to be a small confusion in that in previous years, as far as I can see, points totals have been published for the classes with the additional points relating to the overall added. However this is actually in contravention of the regs as written and published.

Please see the section in the regs below which is highlighted in red - this clearly states that the additional points are awarded ONLY for the overall championship not the individual classes. Individual classes are on the standard fixed points system.

2. 2007 ACU BRITISH SCOOTER ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIP REGULATIONS

THESE REGULATIONS WILL FORM THE BASIS OF HOW THE CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BE DECIDED.

QUALIFYING EVENTS: All events held during 2008 will count towards the championship. The BSSO reserve the right to vary the number of events, without notice, should any meeting be cancelled, postponed, abandoned or otherwise not completed.

ASSESSMENT OF PERFORMANCE: Points will be awarded for each race, up to the first three races on any day to count, in accordance with the POINTS SCALE below. All points will be totalled and the results determined by subtracting the lowest scoring events in accordance with the EVENTS SCALE - see below. The winners will be the competitors with the highest totals.

The solo and sidecar championship will be decided by transferring the solo and sidecar class points to an overall listing, and the winners will be the competitors with the highest points total. This table will form the “top-ten” and will allow those competitors to display the relevant position as their competition number during the year 2008.

POINTS TABLE: Per event (race):

1st = 30; 2nd = 27; 3rd = 25; 4th = 24; 5th = 23; 6th = 22, then onwards reducing by one point for each subsequent position, down to one point for each finisher after 27th.

For the Overall Championship only, bonus points will also be added to each race on the basis of one extra point per finisher beaten in that class, up to a maximum of five points for beating five finishers. For example if three riders finish a race the winner will receive 30 + 2 points, second place would receive 27 + 1 points, and third just 25 points. However if 10 riders finish a race 1st would receive 30 + 5 points, 2nd 27 + 4 points, 3rd 25 + 3 points, 4th 24 + 2 points, 5th 23 + 1 points, and 6th just 22 points, all other finishers would receive their normal number of points with no bonus points.

EVENTS SCALE:

Qualifying events: 12-17 18-23 24-29 30-35 36-41 42-47
Events to drop: 2 3 4 5 6 7

GENERAL REGULATIONS: Except in the case of genuine newcomers, any rider who either changes classes or enters a class in any event coming within the last third of the qualifying championship events, that he/she has not previously scored points in during the season, will not be included in the points results for the purpose of the championship. They will however be included in the “on the day” results for the purpose of any prize presentation.

TIES: In the case of a points tie, after the specified number of events have been deducted, then the winner will be the rider with the highest individual event score from the races that were deducted, if necessary working back until an individual event score margin is reached. If a margin is not reached using this method then the winner shall be the competitor that has competed in the class with the highest average number of starters over the duration of the championship.
